4. 3. Revisiting Shakespeare's CoriolanusCheck all the activities which are mentioned on the page, edit it and post your personal comments. The deadline is the 21st March.A. 1. We've all been to the theatre this year. So, it's high time I ask you about it. Do you agree with Arthur Miller's quote? Why (not)?"The theatre is so endlessly fascinating because it's so accidental. It's so much like life."Arthur Miller
I agree with Arthur Miller´s quote.Throughout life, we all have happier moments than others. When we least expect, accidents happen, and that is all that marks life, although not the desire.
The same happens in the theatre world: a place where we show a role, and try to show it to the world. However, sometimes not everything runs as planned and mishaps / accidents arising. Hence, there might be some comparison between the two situations, because even though all the beauty of life, accidents also mark her.
Ricardo Loureiro, nº22, 10ºF
I agree with the quote from Arthur Miller. The theaters hows different lifestyles, and daily happenings. The text is represented not only a written or spoken text on the stage, because the theater isn’t a literary art. The theater conveys feelings and emotions, I guess :)
(Sónia Lourenço nº27, 10F)
Everyone that have been to the theatre or acted knows that in theatre everything can happen. And if I'm not mistaken someone said "
In my opinion, Arthur Miller found a way of describing this beautiful art. Until this day, I never thought that that was even possible. With that said, I totally agree with him. I consider theatre and acting, from all the arts, one of the most amazing and difficult one. It is, without a doubt, an art where people join strengths. Actors colab with the audience, they show their character's personality, they show their emotions and they expose themselves to people. In terms of acting, they become real people, they made up a whole new life. In a short note, you never know what is going to happen. It is unpredictable and demanding for control freaks. I guarantee you that, personal experience! Using Miller's words, "it's so much like life".

2. Are we also always playing roles in life?“I always am in a role, lovely – for you, for them – even for myself. Yeah... Even when I’m alone, I am still in a role – and I myself am the most exacting audience I have ever had.”
Each person has a different role in the and each one interprets it differently. I interpret a role to the world around me and the world around me plays a certain role that influence and change me. If I am playing a role, well, I am also my own audience therefore I´m always there to god or bad roles that is why I am the most exacting audience. For this reason, I believe that life is a role that we represent along our life path.
Ricardo Loureiro, nº22, 10ºF
I think we don't perform roles. Because it implies we aren't being true. We have spontaneous attitudes, we are ourselves...
(Sónia Lourenço nº27, 10F)
1. In my opinion, I think Arthur Miller is right because in his quote he try to show that theatre is a set of sensations, feelings and actions, and when an actor is representing an character he feels and acts like the character, so he have to improvise.
2. Yes, we are. Our life is the role and the many days we have some good others bad are the many acts independentely if we are alone or not.
Rui Libório, 25, 10thF
In repose for both questions, I think theater is pretty much like our lives. There are good days and bad days. Some people come into our lives and make them better or worst, and we can never predict what is going to happen, but we can live life as we want to and be ourselves our favorite characters! :)
Sofia Cabral, nº4, 10ºF
In life, in our everyday basis, we are this awkward character. This person that we either love or hate. Although, it comes to us to play this role and just like in theatre you are allowed to improvise, to make some changes, to improve the script. I like to believe that we play a role in life because that means that we are actors and actresses. And that means that we make constant efforts to improve our performance in this job that is being ourselves. Matilde Santana, 10thF, 16
In my opinion, I think we all have a role or a purpose in our lives. Don't get me wrong, I don't believe in destiny. Life is made of possibilities and our choices define the course of our lives. But life is also filled with emotions and feelings. Everyday is a new day and we get the opportunity to make mistakes and make them again, and again, and again,... until we have learned the lesson. So yes, our lives are plays, some of them predictable and some of them totally unexpected!

3. How did you like "CORIOLANO"?Please, state your opinions HERE :))))
About "Coriolano", I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either.
In my opinion, Shakespeare lovers will enjoy seeing his work coated with a different guise, as well as embark on a trip full of ironies. This is a serious casual play that requires some degree of attention by the spectator, sometimes you can't blink even once, that is enough to lose this or that detail of a show that makes us think after we left the room. I don't really know much of Shakespeare's plays, I know some of the classic ones, but I think this one is the most political. Sara Noronha nº15 10º F
In my opinion, Coriolanus is a fascinating theatre play, which depicts the story of a Roman general Caio Márcio. At the beginning, hunger and poverty dominate the Roman people. Caio Márcio, future Coriolanus, is seen as a proud person who shows arrogance and contempt for the people.
The way, as Coriolanus sees the world, is highly controlling, and in his hearth there isn´t place for values such as caring. Written by William Shakespeare, the play is based on the Roman character Caio Márcio Coriolanus.
Ricardo Loureiro, nº22, 10ºF
I loved the play and I reckon that despite being a "dificult" play it´s very well done and that kind of plays, the good ones, can bring more people to the theatre.
It has actors with indeniable talent. Albano Jeronimo is one of them and I consider that he brings a lot to the play. I also want to stress that the play is well directed, the comparisons that they make with the clothes, like the military clothes represent a soldier, those kinds of details are very well thinked especially when we are talking about theatre that hasn´t got the budget that cinema, for example, has. When I say that is a dificult play I´m refering to the language used, but nevertheless it´s a good play that I recommend to all. Pedro Bonito Baptista n18 10F
I love Shakespeare´s plays due to the fact that they can transmit the society problems in many different ways, like in the irony, in the symbols, in the settings, (...) because of that the plays are timeless and always can adpat the past/ the present. This play "Coriolanus" is no exception due to the fact is wealth in irony, symbols, settings, (...) but also because of the actor´s quality which was extremely good. In my opinion, the political face of this play is the thing that differentiate this play of the other, especially for the good reasons and not for the bad reasons.
Rui Libório, 25, 10thF
In my opinion this is a beautiful piece of theater not only because they relate to social policy differences, but also because it shows the love that children should have the family(mother), race and determine how each should address the problems and attitude we should take towards proven difficult situations. I think the part is played by good actors, you notice that liked to interpret and composed of important symbols in the course of the play.
Marcelo Pereira nº12 10ºF
The adaptation of the play "Coriolanus" by William Shakespeare to portuguese was very good. This play exposes the differences between the differents social classes,
the rich and the poor, that can be easily manipulated as we can pictured in some scenes of the play. There are other themes like passion for battles and revenge.
I especially liked the detail of marching in the staircase that shows the difference between social classes, the powerful are on top and the people are the beginning.
I recommed seeing the play or the movie to get to know this fascinating story about mathernal love, manipution and revenge.
André Martins, Nº5, 10F
When the play started, I am afraid to admit that my heart skipped a beat. The strong message and the twist that they have done with shadows was breathtaking. However, even when I thought it was going to be calmer, it kept its intensity, its strength. The script, the actors, the smoke, the marching and even the stairs. It all represented a symbol, a massive one, to spread Shakespeare's message. In my opinion, it was an amazing play which lead to a surprising ending. Filled with irony and drama, a play that doesn't disappoints theatre lovers. Matilde Santana, 10thF, 16 I really liked the play, I think it transmited a clear message of manipulation of the power and of the society. Shakeaspeare has an interesting way of criticizing different social classes in his works. The irony, the symbols, the dramatization (...), all of that made the play more intense and with stronger political ideas. It showed us that at some points of our lives, we do our own bed and, then, we have to deal with all of the following consequences. I must admit that I wasn't expecting the ending of the play, but that only improved my opinion about the play. Talking about the cast, I also think they are all congratulated, because their acting was so good, reliable and realistic.Margarida Salvador, nº3, 10thF Some materials you may find useful...
